The symbol of Scotland, today we will make a Crochet Thistle. If you have ever visited Scotland I am sure you will agree with me that is has one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world including beautiful natural flora. Inspired from the wild flowers of highlands these beautiful unique flowers can be made as a single brooch as I have or used to add variety to a floral collection.
This is the thirteenth pattern in a series of FREE CROCHET FLOWER patterns I have & will be sharing with you as many of us stay at home through the coming days & weeks.
My free Crochet Thistle pattern is written below with a simple step by step written photo tutorial or if you prefer a video tutorial, I have also made a Youtube video.
Materials
- 10 meters of green yarn of your choice
- 2 meters of contrasting yarn preferably pink or blue
- Matching crochet hook to your yarn
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
- 50cm florist wire
Gauge: N/A. Use the smallest crochet hook you can with your chosen yarn to create tight stitches, this will help your crochet thistle to keep its form & not flop.
Size: Using fingering weight & a 2.5mm crochet hook my flower is 4cm tip to base with an extra 1.5cm added for the flower head.
Notes: The flower is made in the spiral. The flower head is added with florist wire inserted into the crochet flower cup.

Flower Head
Wrap your contrasting yarn around your first 3 fingers (as shown below) 15-20 times, depending on the thickness of your yarn.
Remove your fingers & insert your florist wire (as shown below), with the centre fold at the base of one end of your wrapped yarn bundle.
Twist the wire below the flower head yarn to secure in place, insert wire from the top of the crocheted flower head pulling the wire through the centre of the magic circle. To create a full blossom head I have separated the yarn with a small comb.
If you wish you can use the same coloured green yarn to cover your wire to create a seamless stem.

Just found your patterns. I love them! So excited to make all the flowers and then put them on quilt blocks to make a quilt.
I’m expecting my first child and hubby is Scottish. I’m doing a bouquet of thistles as decor and absolutely love this pattern. I’m still novice with crochet and it was easy to follow along! Now I just need to figure out the leaves! Thanks for sharing!!
I am so pleased you like my free pattern. I am sure your bouquet will look gorgeous! Congratulations on your baby x
Is there a pattern for the leaves on the thistle ???? not sure if I asked this before but if so I still have not received an answer.
I am doing thistles as part of a project for our local Hospice.

Hello Roseanna,
I found, your beautiful thistle pattern and have started making some to be used as coesages for a family memorial event. My mother-in-law passed this week and was of Scottish descent, so the Thistles are perfect. Would you mind sharing how to make the leaves, I’ve tried a couple of attempts , but they don’t look as good as yours.
Hope you don’t mind helping me
Thanks

I am of Scot-Irish descent. I am making the thistle corsage for my brother’s wife and daughter. I am having a heck of a time trying to make the leaves. Any suggestions?
