Free Crochet Pattern | How to Crochet Granny Square Scarf

Make your own gorgeous Crochet Granny Square Scarf with my FREE EASY CROCHET PATTERN! This 70’s inspired puff flower crochet scarf is made using the traditional granny square with a simple alternating colour trim. Perfect as a weekend project to get your ready in style of the cooler autumnal days to come.

Materials

  • 3mm (US D) Crochet hook
  • 150 meters DK yarn in your first colour choice
  • 150 meters DK yarn in another colour
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors

Gauge: Granny Square Size: 3mm crochet hook 11.5 x 11.5cm.

Size of finished Crochet Granny Scarf when laid flat : 4 Squares – width 28cm x height 16cm | 5 Square – width 34cm x height 16cm

Notes: Patterns is worked in motifs, then sewn together by hand using invisible seam. Once you have made your chosen number of granny squares the trim is added to the top & bottom. Ch3 will be counted as a dc.

Instructions

Row 1: Start with a magic circle. Ch 4 (count as first dc , ch1), *dc, ch1* repeat * to * 6 times, sl st into the first dc. Fasten off & weave in your ends. Total: (dc, ch1) 8 times.

Row 2: Using the new colour. Attach your yarn to any ch-sp. Ch4 (count as tr), add 4tr into the same stitch, you are going to turn this into a 5tr puff stitch, remove your hook from your last st, insert it into the first tr(4th chain), pick up the loop & pull through creating a puff stitch, ch3, skip st, *(5tr puff st, ch3, skip st)* repeat* to* 6 times, sl st into the first tr. Fasten off & weave in your ends. Total: 8 puff stitches.

Row 3: Using the new colour. Attach your yarn to any ch3-sp. Ch3 (count as the beginning of tr triple dec.), yarn over twice, insert hook into the same ch-sp, pull through first two loops, yarn over again, pull through next 2 loops (2 loops left on your hook), yarn over twice, insert hook into next stitich (top of the puff stitch), pick up yarn, pull through first 2 loops, yarn over, pull through next 2 loops, now you shall have 3 loops on your hook, yarn over, pull through all 3 loops, this is your first tr triple dec., ch2, start tr triple dec, in the same stitch with the next two in the ch-sp, ch2, *tr triple dec. with first 2 sts in the ch-sp, 3rd in the next st, ch2, tr triple dec. with 1st st in the same stitch, 2nd & 3rd in the next ch-sp, ch2* repeat * to * 7 times, sl st into the first st. Fasten off & weave in ends. Total: 18 tr triple dec.

Row 4: Attach your next colour yarn in any ch-sp. Ch3 (count as first dc), 2dc in the same ch-sp, ch1, skip st, 3dc, ch1, skip st, 3dc, ch1, skip st, (3tr, ch2, 3tr), ch1 skip st * 3dc, ch1, skip st, 3dc, ch1, skip st, 3dc, ch1, skip st, (3tr, ch1, 3tr, ch1, skip st,* repeat * to * 2 times, sl st into the first st, Fasten off and weave in your ends.

Row 5: Attach your first coloured yarn to any dc, ch 1, sc in the same st, sc in each st, when you get to a corner (sc, ch2, sc) into the ch-sp. Sl st into the first sc. Fasten off & weave in your ends. Total: 44sc.

Once you have made your required amount of Granny Square sew them together using a invisible seam. To do this simply put two motifs face to face (puff stitches will be on the inside). Align your motifs so the stitches match exactly. Insert your tapestry needle into the BACK LOOPS ONLY of the ch stitch at the beginning of the row, bring your needle to the front and repeat in each sc st (22 in toal) in the BACK LOOPS ONLY, with the final st in the first ch of the next corner.

Once you have reached the end fasten off & weave in your ends, when you have finished your granny motifs will look as shown.

Continue attaching your granny motifs together. The final square shall be sewn together with your first one to make a circle scarf which can easily fit over your head.

Trim

Row 1: Attach your chosen coloured yarn to the ch-sp of a corner (as shown in the photo below), ch3 (count as dc), 2dc in the same st, ch1, skip 3 sts, * 3dc, ch1, skip 3 st* repeat * to * 3 times ( in total you will have 6 3dc clusters per granny square motif). Repeat this all the way around your scarf , sl st into the first st. Fasten off, weave in your ends. Total: 24dc cluster for 4 square crochet granny scarf, 30dc clusters for 5 square.

Row 2: Attach your 2nd coloured yarn to any ch-sp. Ch3 (count as dc), 2dc in the same st, ch1, skip 3 sts, * 3dc, ch1, skip 3 st* repeat * to * 22 (28) times, sl st into the first st. Fasten off, weave in your ends. Total: 24dc cluster for 4 square crochet granny scarf, 30dc clusters for 5 square.

Row 3: Attach first coloured yarn to any st. Ch1, sc in same st, 95 (119)sc, sl st into the first st. Fasten off & weave in your ends. Total: 96 (120) sc.
