Free Crochet Snowman Pattern

For the final week I have made a free crochet Snowman Pattern. I wanted to end this little collection of free patterns with a little toy for our little ones, the ones we really make the big effort for Christmas. Since making my Snowman who has been named Sophia the Snowlady! Pod takes her everywhere with her.

This is the fourth and final free crochet Christmas pattern I have & will be sharing with you as many of us stay at home through the month of November.

Materials

2.5mm (US C) Crochet hook
100 meters DK cotton yarn (white)
2 meters DK cotton yarn (brown)
1 meter of DK cotton yarn (orange)
1 meter of DK cotton yarn (black)
20 meters of any yarn of your choosing for the hat & scarf with the matching crochet hook
Yarn needle
Scissors
Stuffing

Gauge: 28st x 24 rows using sc over 10 x 10cms. Using the smallest crochet hook you can with your chosen yarn to create tight stitches, this will help your snowman keep its form & not flop.

Size: Using Circulo Charme yarn & 2.5mm Snowman is 15cm tall, 7cm across.

Notes: All body parts are worked in the spiral. I would recommend using a stitch marker at the beginning of each row to keep count. The hat, scarf & the bag are each turn after every row. Using a contrasting yarn texture such as wool, alpaca or mohair will create a realistic knit like stitch.

Head

Row 1: White Yarn- Start with a magic circle, ch1, 6sc into the magic circle, pull magic circle shut. Total: 6sc.

Row 2: Sc inc., in each stitch. Total: 12sc.

Row 3: *Sc, sc inc.* repeat* 5 times. Total: 18sc.

Row 4: *Sc, sc inc., sc* repeat* 5 times. Total: 24sc.

Row 5: *3sc, sc inc.* repeat* 5 times. Total: 30sc.

Row 6: *2sc, sc inc., 2sc* repeat* 5 times. Total: 36sc.

Row 7: *5sc, sc inc.* repeat* 5 times. Total: 42sc

Rows 8- 14: 42sc. Total: 42sc.

Row 15: *5sc, sc dec.* repeat* 5 times. Total: 36sc

Row 16: *2sc, sc dec., 2sc* repeat* 5 times. Total: 30sc.

Row 17: *3sc, sc dec.* repeat* 5 times. Total: 24sc.

Row 18: *Sc, sc dec., sc* repeat* 5 times. Total: 18sc.

Row 19: *Sc, sc dec.* repeat* 5 times. Total: 12sc.

Stuff the head with filling before your final row.

Row 20: Sc dec., in each stitch. Total: 6sc. Fasten off & leave along tail. Thread the tapestry needle and weave your needle in & out of last 6 stitches to close the head. Fasten off & weave in the ends.

Body

Row 1: Start with a magic circle, ch1, 6sc into the magic circle, pull magic circle shut. Total: 6sc.

Row 2: Sc inc., in each stitch. Total: 12sc.

Row 3: *Sc, sc inc.* repeat* 5 times. Total: 18sc.

Row 4: *Sc, sc inc., sc* repeat* 5 times. Total: 24sc.

Row 5: *3sc, sc inc.* repeat* 5 times. Total: 30sc.

Row 6: *2sc, sc inc., 2sc* repeat* 5 times. Total: 36sc.

Row 7: *5sc, sc inc.* repeat* 5 times. Total: 42sc.

Rows 8- 15: 42sc. Total: 42sc.

Row 16: *5sc, sc dec.* repeat* 5 times. Total: 36sc.

Row 17: 36sc. Total: 36sc.

Row 18: *2sc, sc dec., 2sc* repeat* 5 times. Total: 30sc.

Row 19: 30sc. Total: 30sc.

Row 20: *3sc, sc dec.* repeat* 5 times. Total: 24sc.

Row 21: *Sc, sc dec., sc* repeat* 5 times. Total: 18sc.

Row 22: *Sc, sc dec.* repeat* 5 times. Total: 12sc.

Stuff the body with filling before your final row.

Row 23: Sc dec., in each stitch. Total: 6sc. Fasten off & leave along tail. Thread the tapestry needle and weave your needle in & out of last 6 stitches to close the body. Leave a long tail of 30cm to attach the body to the head. Attach the head to the body.

Face

Thread the black yarn onto a tapestry needle, insert the needle about 1/3 from the bottom of head push the needle on a 45 degree angle up 2 rows (as shown in photo one), make a French knot and push to needle out to the right 4 stitches along (as shown in photo 2).

Make a second French knot and push the needle back to the starting point (as shown in the first photo), fasten off & weave in your ends.

Nose

Row 1 Using orange yarn: Make a magic circle, ch1, place 3 sc in the center and pull tight. Total: 3sc.

Row 2: 3sc. Total: 3sc.

Row 3: Sc, sc inc., sc. Total: 4sc.

Row 4: 4sc. Total: 4sc. Fasten off leave a long tail.

Attach the nose to the face covering the central back knot.

Arms

Brown Yarn: Chain 12, sl ti into the third from the hook this will create the first picot, ch3, sl st into the third from the hook to create the second picot, ch3, sl st into the third from the hook creating the third picot, sl st into the first picot to close the hand, slst down the 9 chains left from the foundation chain. Fasten off & leave a long tail to attach the arm to the body of the Snowman. Repeat to make a second arm.

Hat

Row 1: Coloured Fingering Yarn- Chain 24, hdc in the 3^rd from the chain, 21hdc. Turn. Total: 22hdc = 8cm in length.

Row 2: Chain 1, hdc in the BACK LOOP ONLY of the first st, 21 hdc in the back loop. Turn. Total: 22hdc.

Repeat row 2 until your crochet work is 19cm long.

Fold the hat in half and join both sides together using a sc seam stitch (sc through both fabrics together). Total: 22sc.

This will create a tube.

Fasten off leaving a long tail of 30 cm. Thread the tail onto a tapestry needle & weave the needle in & out of the top of the tube then pull tight to close one side of the hat, repeat to secure the stitches. Fasten off & weave in your ends. Turn the hat to hide the closing stitches inside.

To make the pompom for the top of the hat, wrap your yarn around your first 2 fingers 30 times.

Wrap the thread half way across twice to make a bow. Secure with another wrap & tie in a tight knot, leave a long tail before cutting.

Cut the ends, trim to your desired pompom size. Using the long tail attached to the top of the hat, fasten off & weave in your ends.

Scarf

Row 1: Fingering Yarn- Chain 62, hdc in the 3^rd from the chain, 59hdc. Turn. Total: 60hdc = 30cm in length.

Row 2: Chain 1, hdc in the BACK LOOP ONLY of the first st, 59 hdc in the back loop. Turn. Total: 60hdc.

Row 3: Chain 1, hdc in the BACK LOOP ONLY of the first st, 59 hdc in the back loop. Turn. Total: 60hdc. Fasten off & weave in your ends.
