Instructions
Row 1: Leaving a long tail of 10cm, ch3, sl st into the first ch. Work 6 sc into the centre of the circle. Total: (6 sc).
Row 2: *Sc inc.* repeat * 5 more times. Total: 12sc.
Row 3: *Sc, sc inc.* repeat * 5 more times. Total: 18sc.
Rows 4-8: 18sc. At row 6, turn your crochet inside out so your crochet become a little cup, this will be easier to add your stitches as you work in the round. Once you have finished round 8, using the tail thread your bead into the crochet. The tail of the crochet will help keep the central hole of your bead upright, as you continue crocheting around your bead.
Row 9: *Sc, sc dec. (using the back loops only)* repeat * 5 more times. Total: 12sc.
Row 10: *Sc dec. (using the back loops only)* repeat * 5 more times. Total: 6sc.
Fasten off & weave on your ends. Thread the tail back to the other side of the bead, fasten off & weave in the ends. Pull the crochet fabric around your bead to ensure the crochet is even. Repeat 4 more times to create 5 crochet beads in your colour choice.
Double your yarn, using a 2.5mm crochet hook, chain 175. Fasten off. Thread the wooden & crochet beads onto the string. Add a knot the start of & end where the beads to keep them in place on the necklace. Tie a small knot at the end of the string to stop the chains unravelling. CONGRATULATIONS you have made your Crochet Nursing Necklace!
How to naturally seal & stain your beads
To make your pine beads baby safe, I sealed my beads with natural coconut oil. To do this simply place a small amount of coconut oil in your hands & warmed up the oil with your palms. Next placed the beads in the center of your hand & rolled them in a circular motion for about a minuet (as if you are forming a pea with play dough). Leave your beads to dry naturally in the sun for a day or two as to not pass oil onto your crochet.
If you would like to stain your beads as I have done below | DO NOT DO THIS FOR A BABY TEETHER OF NURSING NECKLACE AS IT IS STAINED WITH COFFEE. Make some extra strong filtered coffee, once the coffee is cool, place your beads in the liquid for 12-24 hours. Remove your beads & thread them onto some florist wire to form a mini triangle hanger (this will ensure your beads dry evenly without touching), allow to naturally dry in the sun for a few days. Finally seal with natural coconut oil as above.
I love the colour depth created with the natural coffee staine. This one has become my new crochet necklace, plus the smell of coffee is devine to smell.
