The crochet Ranunculus flower, is my final crochet flower pattern for this series. I want to say a huge ‘Thank You’ for everyone who has supported me on this amazing journey & given me a feeling of community while we have been in isolation these last few months. Your support, e-mails and kind words have been wonderful pick me ups when times have felt a little difficult. And through your support, Moara Crochet has been listed as the no.53 in the list of the top 100 crochet blogs 2020 on Feedspot.
This is the fifteenth pattern in a series of FREE CROCHET FLOWER patterns I have shared with you as many of us have stayed home during lockdown 2020.
My free Crochet Ranunculus pattern is written below with a simple step by step written photo tutorial or if you prefer a video tutorial, I have also made a Youtube video.
Materials
- 2 meters of green yarn of your choice
- 25 meters of contrasting yarn
- Matching crochet hook to your yarn
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
- 50cm florist wire
Gauge: N/A. Use the smallest crochet hook you can with your chosen yarn to create tight stitches, this will help your crochet flower to keep its form & not flop.
Size: Using fingering weight & a 2.5mm crochet hook my flower is 4cm wide and 3cm length.
Notes: The flower is made as a ribbon then turned on itself to create a bloom. The sepals are added below the bloom through the central florist wire.
How to make Crochet Ranunculus
Row 1 –Center Green Yarn: Chain 6, dc in the 4th chain from the hook (count as dc), dc inc., dc, dc inc., sl st into the first dc to create a small circle. Cut tail leaving a long tail, weave the thread down through the last dc & the first dc to create a small cone. Fasten off & weave in your ends.
Petals
Row 1 – Coloured yarn of your choice: Chain 77, dc in the 4th chain from the hook (count as dc), *dc inc., dc,* repeat * 35 times, dc. Turn. Total: 112 dc. Your crochet will start to curl.
Row 2. Ch1, sc in the same st, *skip 2 sts, 5dc in same stitch, skip 2 stitches, sc* repeat* 17 more times, 2sc. Total: 18 shells. Fasten off & leave along tail of 50cm.
Sepals
Row 1. Green Yarn: Magic circle, add 6sc into the centre of your magic circle, sl st into the first st. Total: 6sc. DO NOT CLOSE YOUR MAGIC CIRCLE TIGHT AS YOU WILL INSERT THE FLORIST WIRE LATER.
Row 2. Sc inc. in each stitch, sl st into first sc. Total: 12sc.
Row 3. Ch3, sl st into 2nd from the hook, skip stitch, *picot, skip st* repeat * 4 more times. Sl st into first st. Fasten off & weave in your ends. Total: 6 picot stitches. Fasten off and weave in your end leaving the magic circle tail.
Assembly
Insert your wire in & out of the green central flower piece. Using the long tail from the crochet ribbon, gradually wrap the ribbon around the central green centre adding a stitch as your turn. Continue this motion until you have wrapped and secured all the ribbon creating a flower bloom.
Insert the sepal motif through the central wire as shown below. If you wish you can use the same coloured green yarn to cover your wire to create a seamless stem.

This is such a nice clear tutorial, thank you so much, I’m making this as a birthday gift
I have made many crochet flowers over the years and was skeptical about how this would turn out being so simple. But the pattern is the best kind of simple; it’s elegant and I LOVE this sweet flower. Thank you so much for sharing it with us for free.
