Baskets are one of my passions, therefore it is time for a FREE Crochet Basket Pattern. I love crochet, but I find woven baskets are always my preferred style until I tried the Crochet Herringbone Stitch with ribbon yarn. This month I was kindly gifted some Papier recycled yarn, in which each ball is made from 2 recycled plastic bottles from the new Brazilian yarn company Fisher Fios. The ribbon style yarn created a texture similar to a traditional woven basket which I just loved. So today I am going to share with you how you can create your own Crochet Basket with my new Free Pattern.
This is a quick easy crochet make which can be made with any yarn! I have used natural rustic coloured beige to create my basket, but this would work beautifully in any colour. The basket can be made in any size of your choosing – simply increase or decrease the base to your required size then continue with the Crochet Herringbone Stitch.
My free Crochet Basket pattern is written below with a simple step by step written photo tutorial or if you prefer a video tutorial, I have also made a Youtube video.
Materials
- 80-100 meters Chunky Yarn (I have used Papier by Fischer Fios in Capim Dourado)
- Matching crochet hook for your yarn I have used between 6 mm | J Crochet Hook
- Scissors
- Tapestry Needle
Gauge: 13 stitches x 10 Rows in Herringbone Stitch over 10 x 10 cm.
Size: Basket 15cm diameter x 11cm height.
Notes: The base is made in the round. The Herringbone stitch is created through turning the work. To aid in counting add a stitch marker to the beginning of each Row.
Crochet Stitches
To make my crochet basket, you will be using a few crochet stitches including: Single Crochet (sc) and the advanced Herringbone stitch – explained below.
Free Crochet Basket Pattern
Row 1: Make a magic circle, chain 1, add 6sc into the magic circle. Pull the magic circle shut, continue to crochet over the tail to secure. Total: 6sc
Row 2: 6sc inc. Total: 12sc
Row 3: Chain 1, *sc, sc inc.* repeat * to * 5 more times. Total: 18sc
Row 4: Chain 1, *sc, sc inc., sc* repeat * to * 5 more times. Total: 24sc
Row 5: Chain 1, *3sc, sc inc.* repeat * to * 5 more times. Total: 30sc
Row 6: Chain 1, *2sc, sc inc., 2sc* repeat * to * 5 more times. Total: 36sc
Row 7: Chain 1, *5sc, sc inc.* repeat * to * 5 more times. Total: 42sc
Row 8: Chain 1, *3sc, sc inc., 3sc* repeat * to * 5 more times, sl st into first st.. Total: 48sc
Now the base of our basket is created we will TURN after each row. The first stitch of every row will start with a regular single crochet stitch ( or reverse single crochet stitch). Then you will continue working in the Herringbone stitch.
