Create your own Crochet Patchwork Blanket with my easy step by step tutorial. Crochet blankets are where most crocheters start our journey. Today I will be sharing with you how to create two different Granny Square motifs to create the classic Star Patchwork design which seems to have taken the yarn world by storm this year. This classic beautiful design is created from 16 crochet granny squares which are pieced together to create a central star. This design is a wonderful slow crochet project which you can work on during the cold Winter days. For this pattern I have joined up with the wonderful duo Fiona & Sophie of Botanical Yarns from Yorkshire. I had the pleasure of meeting these wonderful ladies at the recent Yorkshire Yarn Festival in which I spent the afternoon meeting many creative yarn vendors from all over the UK selling handmade yarns and essential crafting tools for the crocheter or knitter.
This is a slow crochet process which should be enjoyed over many evenings. Don’t rush the process as it is easy to make a mistake piecing the pieces in the wrong order. This is a great stash busting project to use up all of those left over yarn balls from previous projects. To create my squares, I have used fingering weight yarn to create 4 full star motifs to make a cushion, but this could easily be made with DK yarn with just one single star motif (16 granny squares) to create a beauitful cushion cover. This pattern can also be extended into a full blanket connecting the full star motifs as you go creating a true heirloom crochet quilt which can last a life time.
My free Crochet Patchwork Blanket pattern is written below with a simple step by step written photo tutorial or if you prefer a video tutorial, I have also made a Youtube video for each section. Below is my sample of 4 Patchwork Star Motif connected together to create a cushion cover.
Materials (to create cushion cover)
- 400 meters Fingering Weight Yarn ( I have used Pampas Grass in Merino Sock by Botnaical Yarns)
- Mini Skein Set – 85 meters Fingering Weight Yarn per colour( I have used Yorkshire Yarn Festival Set in Merino Sock by Botanical Yarns)
- Matching crochet hook for your yarn I have used 2.5 mm | B Crochet Hook
- Scissors
- Tapestry Needle
Gauge: 28 stitches x 12 Rows in Double Crochet over 10 x 10 cm.
Size: Per Granny Square with Fingering Yarn and 2.5mm crochet hook 5.5cm x 5.5.cm.
Notes: Each Granny Square is turned after each row to create the same texture on both sides. Weave in your ends as you go. Sew the motifs together using the Back Loops only. Creating a crochet patchwork piece | blanket | cushion is a slow craft. Take time to put your motifs in order and sew each one together with care to match the colours and stitches.
Crochet Stitches
Double Crochet (dc) – Yarn over, insert hook into the stitch, pick up the yarn (3 loops on the hook), yarn over pull through the first 2 loops on the hook, yarn over, pull through the last 2 stitches on the hook.
Back Loop (back loop) – Insert the hook | needle into the back loop of the stitch only.

How to Connect the Motifs – Vertical
To create the Star motif we will start with connecting the veritcal rows of the star pattern in sets of 4. Follow the plan below to connect your motifs using the instructions below.
Prefer to watch my Youtube video on How to Crochet Patchwork Blanket Star Pattern? Here is my step by step tutorial for you.
All squares will be connected from the back loops to create a invisible join. This will create a defined front and back, while also creating two different textures effects for your blanket.
Step 1: Thread a matching coloured piece of yarn, double the length of motifs you would like to join.
Step 2: Align the motifs in your desired pattern. Starting at the 2nd chain of any corner (this is the middle chain), insert the tapestry needle into the back loop of two parallel motifs.
Step 3: Insert the needle into the back loops of the next stitches (if you wish you can join your motifs and sew over the tail).
Repeat this step until you reach the middle chain of the top of the motif.
Step 4: Align the next two motif above, sew into the back loop of all four motifs in the round, as shown in the photo on the right. Pull tight to close the join.
Step 5: Repeat Step 3 until all the stitches are joined. Continue in this manner until all your motifs are joined. Fasten off & weave in your ends.
How to Connect the Motifs – Horizontal
As your squares are already joined in the corners, the connecting 4 motif join (Step 4 from the previous page) will be skipped.
Step 1: Thread a matching coloured piece of yarn, double the length of motifs you would like to join.
Step 2: Starting at the 2nd chain of any corner (this is the middle chain), insert the tapestry needle into the back loop of two parallel motifs.
Step 3: Insert the needle into the back loops of the next stitches (if you wish you can join your motifs and sew over the tail).Repeat this step until you reach the middle chain of the top of the motif.
Step 4: As the motifs are already joined, thread the needle behind to skip the join.
Step 5: Repeat Step 3 until all the stitches are joined. Continue in this manner until all your motifs are joined. Fasten off & weave in your ends.
To can create a variations of this pattern through inverting the main colour and contrasting colour as shown.
