Why is crochet gauge important?

Gauge becomes important when you want to make accessories such as hats and gloves or clothing, as it will ensure you item is the right size. If your gauge is not correct, your crochet project will either be too big or too small.

Gauge will also affect the character of your fabric. E.g. If your stitches are too tight maybe there will not be enough give in the crochet hat to fit comfortably or it becomes too stiff. Alternatively your fabric could become too loose.

Finally gauge will also affect the amount of yarn you use. If your gauge is too small, you may have a lot of yarn left over or if your gauge is too big you may not have enough yarn to finish your project.

What is gauge?

Gauge is combination of the amount of stitches over 10cm and how many rows over 10cm. Ensuring your gauge is a match to the pattern you choose you know your item will be the right size. This is very easy to do and will only take 30 -60 minutes to do. I promise you the time you invest in this vital step will save you a lot of upset at the end when you realize your project is the wrong size.

How to make a Gauge Swatch

Materials

  • Yarn of your choice
  • Matching crochet hook written in the pattern
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • Blocking board ( I like to use a piece of cardboard)
  • Pins
  • Water spray

Step 1: Chain the number of stitches written in the pattern you wish to use, add 5-6 more chains.

Step 2: Start Row 1 with the type of stitch specified in the gauge this will normally be sc or dc. Continue adding rows until your swatch is 13-15cm in height. Fasten off and weave in your ends.
