Crochet Peony Flower

As summer begins in many parts of the world, to celebrate today I am sharing with your my Crochet Peony Flower pattern. Peony flowers are one of my all time favorite flowers, with their big bursting blooms filled with petals of the pastel pink. An quintessential English cottage garden flower which always reminds me of my Nana’s garden.

Make your own Crochet Peony Flower in any yarn of your choice. Add your blooms to cushions, wreaths or make collection of blooms for a summer wedding.

Materials

• 30 meters of pastel pink yarn
• 5 meters of green yarn
• Matching sized crochet hook for your yarn ( I have used a 2mm)
• Yarn needle
• Scissors
• Florist wire (optional)
• Glue (optional)

Gauge: N/A

Size: With fingering cotton yarn and a 2 mm crochet hook my Peony flower is 8cm diameter, 4.5cm in height.

Notes: The flower center is made from a crochet ribbon, with individual petals added around the central bloom. The sepals are worked both in the round and turned.

Stitches

Slip Stitch (sl st): Insert hook into the stitch, pick up yarn, pull through the loop.

Single Crochet (sc): Insert hook into the stitch, pick up yarn, yarn over, pick up yarn, pull through the 2 loops.

Half Double Crochet (hdc): Yarn over, insert hook into the stitch, pick up yarn, yarn over, pull through the all 3 loops.

Double Crochet (dr): Yarn over, insert hook into the stitch, pick up yarn, yarn over, pull through the first 2 loops, yarn over, pick up yarn, pull through the last 2 loops.

Treble Crochet (tr): Yarn over twice (3 on the hook), insert hook into the stitch, pick up the yarn (4 on your hook), yarn over pull through first two loops on the hook (3 on your hook), yarn over pull through next two loops on the hook (2 loops on the hook), yarn over pull through last two loops on the hook.

Crochet Peony Flower Pattern

Row 1: Chain 40, dc in the 4th from the hook, *dc, dc inc.* repeat * to * 16 more times, dc in final st. Turn. Total: 55dc.

Row 2: Ch3 (count as dc), 3dc, dc inc., 2dc, *3dc, dc inc., 2dc* repeat * to * 7 more times. Turn. Total: 64dc.

Row 3: *(sc, ch3,dc) in the same stitch, (dc, ch3, sl st into the same stitch), (ch3, tr), tr inc., (tr, ch3, sl st into the same stitch), (ch3, dc), (dc, ch3, sl st into the same stitch) * repeat * to * 8 more times, sc in final stitch. Fasten off leaving a long tail of 50cm.

Thread a tapestry needle onto the long tail, weave the thread down the first 3 chain stitches created at the beginning of Row 1. Rotate the ribbon around itself to create a coil, using the long tail place a stitch through foundation chain and the fold, continue turning the petals around the first fold arranging the petals to your desired position.

Add a sewing stitch each time to secure the petals in place and continue until all the petals are attached. Fasten off & weave in your ends.

Flower Petals (Make 6)

Row 1: Chain 4 (count as dc, ch1), 7dc into the 4th chain from the hook. Turn. Total: 8dc.

Row 2: Ch3 (count as dc), dc, dc inc., dc inc., dc inc., dc inc., 2dc. Turn. Total 12dc.

Row 3: Ch3 (count as dc), 2dc, dc inc., dc, dc inc., dc inc., dc, dc inc., 3dc. Turn. Total: 16dc.

Row 4: Ch3 (count as dc), 15dc. Turn. Total: 16 dc.

Row 5: Ch1, skip 2 st, 2sc, 10dc, 2sc. Turn.

Row 6: Ch1, skip st, 3sc, 3dc, 3dc inc., 3dc 3sc, sl st into ch1 made at the beginning of Row.4.

Row 7: Turn to work sc down the side of your petal. Ch1, sc into the same, place 2sc in each dc row (8sc in total), sc in the foundation chain, 2sc in each dc row (8sc in total), sc in sc st of row 5, sc in chain 1 from row 6, 15sc across the top of the petal, sc in sl st from row 6, sl st into first sc. Total: 36sc. Fasten off & weave in your ends on 4 petals. LEAVE A LONG TAIL 30cm ON TWO PETALS.

Once you have made all six petals, align three petals into a triangle shape and using the long tail connect the three petals at the centre (as shown below). Repeat one more time make two sets of three petals.

Place the ribbon flower in the center and secure. Your crochet Peony Flower bloom is complete.

Sepal

Row 1: Make a magic circle, ch3 (count as first dc), add 23 dc into the center of the magic circle, sl st into the first dc. Pull the magic circle shut. Total: 24dc.

Row 2: *Ch3 (count as first dc), dc inc., dc, TURN,

chain 3 (count as dc), triple dc dec., TURN,

sc dec. over two stitches, turn your work, add a sl st into the side of the sc dec, add 4 sl sts down the previous 2 rows,

sl st into the next stitch, this will create your first sepal, sl st into the next st* repeat * to * 5 mores times, sl st into the first st. Total: 6 sepals. Fasten off leaving a long tail of 50 cm.

How to Assemble Crochet Peony Flower

If you wish to add florist wire. Cut a piece of florist wire 50cm, thread it through the bottom of the flower bloom, once half way fold the wire in half creating a double stem. Next thread the stem through the center of the magic circle of the sepal.

Thread the long tail of the sepal onto a tapestry needle. Weave the needle through row 1 of the sepal to secure around the base of the flower, leaving the sepals to hang down freely.
