To start off 2025 I have released my first Free Crochet Flower Pattern of the year which is the Crochet Carnation Flower. This year I will continue to share Free Crochet flowers with you but I will be doing it with a monthly theme. Each month I will create a new pattern inspired by the birth flowers of each month. So to start the year, the Birth Flowers for January are actually Snow Drops and Carnation flowers. I have already made a Free Crochet Snow Drop Pattern which can be found HERE.
Therefore today I will be sharing with you how to make your own Crochet Carnation Flower. The carnation flower symbolises ‘the warmth, love and affection that people born in January bring to the world’. This flower is a bursting bloom filled with delicate layers of many petals. Available in a huge range of colours this is a flower which can be made to match any occasion, style or mood.
This is easy crochet flower to make which I am sure you can make with nearly any yarn you have in your stash. You can make your flower with any yarn and matching sized crochet hook (although you do want to keep your stitches tight, so use the smallest crochet hook you can for your sized yarn). Depending on the size of yarn you use will increase or decrease your sized flower, but I can promise they will all be beautiful.

Materials
- 30-50 meters Sport weight Yarn (I have used Circulo Amigurumi Yarn in baby pink)
- (Optional) 20 meters of Sports weight yarn in contrasting colour for the tips
- 20 meters Sport weight Yarn (I have used Circulo Amigurumi Yarn in Brazilian Flag)
- Matching crochet hook for your yarn I have used between 2mm | A Crochet Hook
- Scissors
- Tapestry Needle
- 40cm piece of wire
- Pliers
Gauge: N/A Use the smallest crochet hook you can with your chosen yarn to create tight stitches, this will help your leave keep the form.
Size: My crochet Flower is 10cm diameter With 2mm hook and Sport weight yarn overall stem 26cm.
Notes: The flower is made in the round. It is optional to change colour for the tips of the flower to create a contrast. The complete flower is made in 3 sections: Flower, Receptacle, Leaves. A wire in threaded through the base of the flower, followed by the receptacle, yarn is used to wrap around the wire, the leaves are made as individual motifs then wrapped together around a central stem.
Crochet Stitches
To make my crochet Safe Leaf, you will be using a few advanced crochet stitches including: Slip Stitch (sl st), Single Crochet (sc), Half Double Crochet (hdc),Double Crochet (dc).
Flower
Row 1: Make a magic circle, ch3 (count as dc), 7dc into the center of the magic circle, sl st into the first dc. Total: 8dc.
Row 2: Chain 3 (count as dc), 7dc, sl st into the first dc. Total: 8dc.
Row 3: Chain 1, sc into first st, 7sc, sl st into the first sc. Total: 8sc.
Row 4: Chain 3 (count as dc), dc into the same stitch, 7dc inc., sl st into the first dc. Total: 16dc.
Row 5: Chain 3 (count as dc), 2dc into the same stitch, 15 triple dc inc., sl st into the first dc. Total: 48dc.
Row 6: Chain 3 (count as dc), 2dc into the same stitch, 47 triple dc inc., sl st into the first dc. Total: 144dc.
Row 7: *(sc,hdc), dc, 2dc inc., dc, (hdc, sc)* repeat * to * 23 more times, sl st into the first stitch. Total: 24 petals. If changing colour, fasten off and weave in your ends.
Row 8 Optional to change colour: *Ch2, sl st into the 2nd from the hook, sl st into the next stitch* repeat until the end, sl st into the first stitch. Fasten off and weave in your ends.
Receptacle
Row 1 Green yarn: Leave 2 meters tail before making a magic circle (the tail will be used to wrap around the stem later), chain 1, add 6sc to the center of the magic circle. Total: 6sc.
Row 2: 6sc inc. Total: 12sc.
Rows 3-8: 12sc. Total: 12sc. Fasten off leaving a 50cm tail.
Leaves (Make 2)
Step 1: Leave a tail of 1.5m before starting the foundation chain, chain 17.
Step 2: Sl st in the second from the hook, sc, hdc, 2dc, hdc, sc, sl st. Fasten off and weave in your end.
Step 3: Turn to work the first chains of the foundation chain, pick up the yarn of the 1.5 meter tail through the second chain (this will be the sl st), sc, hdc, 2dc, hdc, sc, sl st. Fasten off and weave in your ends. Now you will have a double leaf motif as shown.
How to Assemble Crochet Carnation Flower
Step 1: Bend the florist wire in half, thread this through the center of the flower weaving the wire in and out of the first 3 rows, as shown in the photo below.
Step 2: Thread the wire through the center of the Receptacle, cupping the first 4 rows of the flower into the motif, using the 50cm tail, sew the flower into the motif as shown. Fasten off and weave in this end.
Step 3: Using the long tail of 2 meters, carefully wrap the yarn around the folded wire. Continue wrapping the yarn until you reach 8-10cm below the flower, insert the leaf motif through the stem at the central chain (this it the center chain where you sl st from both sides = chain 9).
Step 4: Continue wrapping the yarn around the stem. Repeat the process with the second leaf set 6-8cm below the first leaf. Next fold the tips of the wire, up aginst the stem, continue wrapping the yarn around all the wires (this will create a smooth tip), once you reach the end. Fasten off and weave in your ends. If your flower petals are falling down you can add a stitch between the petals to secure – this is most likely with larger flowers.
