Popcorn Crochet Stitch tutorial - Moara Crochet

Crochet Popcorn Stitch | Tutorial

Learn how to crochet popcorn stitch in a few simple steps. When used this stitch gives a 3D raised sphere of stitches that literally pop out of the fabric, hence the name ‘popcorn’. I like to use this stitch when I want to create a contrast of stitches or to imitate a bumpy form in my crochet. To help you practice this new stitch I have a FREE CROCHET FLOWER PATTERN which uses the popcorn stitch to imitate the little blooms of the Lavender Flower.

My simple step by step written photo tutorial is below or if you prefer a video tutorial, I have also made a Youtube video.

Notes

  • The popcorn stitch is worked with multiple of 3-5 stitches in one single stitch. For both of my examples I have used 5 dc in the same stitch to create a fuller texture.
  • As the stitch creates a large amount of volume it is standard to follow your stitch with either a sc or a ch1 to prevent overcrowding of the fabric which can cause your work to curve.
  • In the examples below I will show you how to crochet the popcorn stitch in the round & worked flat each time with a ch1 as this is my preferred method as I live in a hot climate, if you would like your fabric to be more dense you can replace the ch1 with a sc to close the space between the stitches.

How to Crochet Popcorn Stitch | Worked Flat

Notes: Each Popcorn stitch is made of a multiple of 2 stitches therefore you foundation chain will need to be multiple of 2 + 2. E.g. If you would like 10 puff stitches you will need (10 x 2) = 20 +2 = foundation chain 22. The extra 2 chains are the final foundation ch & turning chain. For the example I have made a chain of 12.

Row 1: Chain 12, sc in the second from the hook, 10sc. Turn.

Row 2: Ch1, sc in the first stitch, (5 dc in the same stitch, remove your hook from the final stitch, insert your hook into the first dc.

Pick up the loop & pull through, now your popcorn stitch is now complete, skip st, (ch1 or sc), *popcorn stitch, ch1* repeat * 4 more times or until your desired length.

Step 3

Repeat rows 1 & 2 to your design.
